How to Set Up and Use Zapier

The Zapier MCP server connects any MCP-compatible AI assistant to the full Zapier ecosystem — thousands of apps including Gmail, Slack, Google Sheets, Salesforce, GitHub, HubSpot, and more — through a single standardised interface. Rather than building custom integrations, you enable specific Zapier actions through a dashboard and the AI can immediately execute them: send emails, create issues, update CRM records, post Slack messages, and trigger any automation you have configured. It supports both classic per-action tools and an agentic mode with meta-tools for discovering and invoking actions dynamically.

Prerequisites

  • A Zapier account (free tier available at zapier.com)
  • An MCP-compatible AI client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, or ChatGPT
  • An API key or OAuth credentials generated at mcp.zapier.com
  • The actions you want to expose must be enabled via the Zapier MCP dashboard at mcp.zapier.com
1

Create your Zapier MCP credentials

Go to mcp.zapier.com and sign in with your Zapier account. Generate an API key for personal/local use, or set up OAuth credentials for multi-user applications. Copy the MCP server URL provided.

# Visit: https://mcp.zapier.com
# Generate API Key or OAuth credentials
# Copy the MCP server URL shown in the dashboard
2

Enable the actions you want

In the mcp.zapier.com dashboard, browse the available actions and enable the ones you want the AI to be able to call. Each enabled action becomes a callable tool (e.g. gmail_send_email, slack_send_message).

3

Add the Zapier MCP server to your client

Configure your MCP client to connect to the Zapier MCP server URL. For Claude Desktop, add an entry in claude_desktop_config.json. The server URL and your API key come from the mcp.zapier.com dashboard.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "zapier": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "zapier-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "ZAPIER_MCP_URL": "https://mcp.zapier.com/api/mcp/s/YOUR_SERVER_ID/mcp"
      }
    }
  }
}
4

Verify available tools

Ask your AI client to list the enabled Zapier actions. In agentic mode, use the list_enabled_zapier_actions meta-tool; in classic mode, the individual action tools appear directly.

5

Test with a simple action

Try a low-stakes action first (e.g. sending yourself a test email or creating a draft) to confirm end-to-end connectivity before using it in production workflows.

Zapier Examples

Client configuration (Claude Desktop)

Configuration for Claude Desktop using the Zapier MCP server URL from the dashboard. Replace the URL with the one from mcp.zapier.com.

{
  "mcpServers": {

      }
    }
  }
}

Prompts to try

Example prompts that use Zapier MCP tools to interact with connected apps.

- "Send an email to [email protected] with subject 'Meeting Notes' and summarise our conversation."
- "Post a message in the #engineering Slack channel: deployment succeeded."
- "Create a GitHub issue titled 'Fix login redirect bug' in the my-org/my-repo repository."
- "Add a new row to my Google Sheet 'Sales Tracker' with today's date and the deal value."
- "What Zapier actions do I have enabled right now?"

Troubleshooting Zapier

AI says no tools are available or tool list is empty

Log in to mcp.zapier.com and verify that at least one action is enabled. New accounts start with no enabled actions — you must explicitly enable each action you want exposed.

Authentication error when connecting the MCP server

Double-check that the ZAPIER_MCP_URL or API key matches exactly what is shown in your mcp.zapier.com dashboard. API keys are scoped to your account and do not work across accounts.

Action executes but produces unexpected results

Zapier actions map directly to your connected app credentials. Ensure the Zapier app connection (under My Apps) is still authorised and that the connected account has the required permissions.
