How to Set Up and Use WordPress
The WordPress MCP server connects AI assistants to one or more WordPress sites through the WordPress REST API, enabling natural language management of posts, pages, comments, plugins, and taxonomies. It uses WordPress Application Passwords for secure authentication and stores site credentials in a local JSON configuration file, allowing you to manage multiple sites from a single server instance. Content teams, developers, and site administrators who want to automate WordPress workflows — from drafting posts to querying site settings — can use this server with Claude Desktop or other MCP clients.
Prerequisites
- Node.js 18 or later installed
- One or more WordPress sites with REST API enabled (WordPress 5.6+ default) and Application Passwords feature active
- WordPress Application Password generated for each site: WordPress Admin > Users > Profile > Application Passwords
- An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop or Cursor
- Write access to a local file path for the wp-sites.json configuration file
Install the server package
Install server-wp-mcp from npm globally or use npx to run it directly. For a persistent local install, npm install is recommended.
npm install server-wp-mcp
# or install via Smithery CLI
npx -y @smithery/cli install server-wp-mcp --client claudeGenerate a WordPress Application Password
In your WordPress admin panel, go to Users > Your Profile > Application Passwords. Enter a name for the new password (e.g., 'Claude MCP') and click Add New Application Password. Copy the generated password — it is shown only once.
Create the wp-sites.json configuration file
Create a JSON file that maps site nicknames to their URL, username, and Application Password. Store this file in a secure location accessible only by your user.

}
}Configure your MCP client
Add the server to your Claude Desktop configuration, pointing WP_SITES_PATH to the absolute path of your wp-sites.json file.
Restart your MCP client and test
Restart Claude Desktop and ask it to list posts from one of your configured sites. This confirms the server can authenticate and reach the WordPress REST API.

- "List all pending comments on myblog's latest post"
- "Show me all available REST API endpoints on my staging site"
- "Publish the draft post with ID 42 on myblog"
- "List all categories on myblog"Troubleshooting WordPress
Authentication fails with 401 Unauthorized from the WordPress REST API
Verify the Application Password in wp-sites.json is correctly formatted with spaces as generated by WordPress (e.g., 'abcd 1234 efgh 5678'). Ensure the WordPress user has sufficient permissions (Editor or Administrator role). Confirm Application Passwords are not disabled by a security plugin.
Server cannot find the wp-sites.json file at startup
Ensure WP_SITES_PATH in your MCP client config is an absolute file path (e.g., /Users/yourname/wp-sites.json), not a relative path. Verify the file exists and is valid JSON by running 'python3 -m json.tool /path/to/wp-sites.json'.
REST API returns 404 for all endpoints
Ensure WordPress pretty permalinks are enabled (Settings > Permalinks > set to any non-Plain option and save). The REST API requires permalink rewriting to be active. Also confirm your site URL in wp-sites.json does not have a trailing slash.
