How to Set Up and Use WordPress
The WordPress MCP Server lets AI assistants interact with one or more WordPress sites through the WordPress REST API, enabling natural language management of blog posts and content. It exposes tools to create new posts, retrieve existing posts with pagination, and update post content and status — all authenticated via WordPress application passwords. This server is built entirely with JavaScript and was developed using Cline, making it straightforward to audit and extend.
Prerequisites
- Node.js 20.0.0 or higher
- An active WordPress installation with the REST API accessible (enabled by default on WordPress 5.6+)
- A WordPress application password generated from the user profile page (WP Admin > Users > Profile > Application Passwords)
- npm for dependency installation and building
- An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop

Authentication fails with 401 Unauthorized when calling the REST API
Ensure you are using a WordPress Application Password, not your main login password. Application passwords look like 'xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx' with spaces. Verify the username matches the account that generated the application password.
REST API returns 404 or is unreachable at /wp-json/wp/v2/
Check that the WordPress REST API is not disabled by a security plugin. Navigate to your-site.com/wp-json/ in a browser — if it returns JSON, the API is active. Also verify WORDPRESS_SITE_URL does not have a trailing slash.
Node.js version error on startup
This server requires Node.js 20.0.0 or higher. Run 'node --version' to check your current version. Use nvm to switch: 'nvm install 20 && nvm use 20'.
