How to Set Up and Use Travel Hacking Toolkit

Travel Hacking Toolkit is an AI-powered travel search and optimization framework that gives Claude Code and other AI assistants access to award flight availability across 27 mileage programs, real GDS cash pricing, hotel comparison, loyalty balance aggregation, and points transfer optimization. It connects to live APIs including Seats.aero for award space, Duffel for cash fares, and AwardWallet for loyalty account balances, and surfaces strategies like hidden city fares, virtual interlining, and cheapest points-to-miles transfer paths. Frequent travelers, points hobbyists, and travel advisors who want AI-driven trip planning with real data — not hallucinated itineraries — will find this toolkit invaluable.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10 or later with the uv package manager
  • Claude Code (for /plugin installation) or another supported AI assistant
  • A Seats.aero API key (SEATS_AERO_API_KEY) for award flight search
  • A Duffel API key (DUFFEL_API_KEY_LIVE) for cash flight pricing
  • Optional: AwardWallet, Southwest, American Airlines, Chase, or Amex credentials for loyalty balance features
1

Install via the Claude Code plugin marketplace

If using Claude Code, install the Travel Hacking Toolkit directly from the plugin marketplace using the built-in /plugin command.

/plugin marketplace add borski/travel-hacking-toolkit
/plugin install travel-hacker@borski
2

Run the interactive key setup script

Use the provided setup script to configure your API keys. The script walks through each supported service and saves credentials to your environment.

bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/borski/travel-hacking-toolkit/main/scripts/setup-keys.sh)
3

Set your core API keys

At minimum, configure the Seats.aero and Duffel API keys for award and cash flight search. Other keys are optional and unlock additional features.

export SEATS_AERO_API_KEY=your_seats_aero_key
export DUFFEL_API_KEY_LIVE=your_duffel_key
export IGNAV_API_KEY=your_ignav_key
4

Optionally add loyalty account credentials

To enable balance aggregation and Southwest/AA-specific search, add the relevant credentials. Each pair unlocks a specific portal.

export AWARDWALLET_API_KEY=your_aw_key
export AWARDWALLET_USER_ID=your_aw_user
export SW_USERNAME=your_sw_email
export SW_PASSWORD=your_sw_password
5

Start your AI assistant and plan a trip

Launch Claude Code or your AI assistant and ask it to search for award flights, compare cash prices, or optimize a loyalty redemption.

Prompts to try

Natural language queries the toolkit can answer with real live data.

- "Find me the cheapest business class award from SFO to Tokyo in August"
- "Plan a trip to Paris Aug 11-15 in business class using points"
- "What's the cheapest time to fly SFO to NRT on points?"
- "Compare all options for SFO to CDG round trip — cash and points"
- "What's the best transfer path from Chase Ultimate Rewards to book this flight?"
- "Show me hotel options in Tokyo with my Amex Platinum benefits"

Troubleshooting Travel Hacking Toolkit

Award flight search returns no results or 'API key invalid' error

Verify your SEATS_AERO_API_KEY is correct and active at seats.aero. Note that some mileage programs have limited availability data — try broadening your date range or routing.

Cash pricing fails or returns empty results from Duffel

Ensure DUFFEL_API_KEY_LIVE is set (not a test key). Duffel live keys require approval from Duffel — check your account status at duffel.com/dashboard if the key was recently created.

/plugin install command not recognized

The /plugin marketplace command requires Claude Code. For other clients, clone the repository manually and follow the Python setup instructions in the README, then add the server to your MCP config manually.
