How to Set Up and Use Toki

Toki is a Git-aware CLI todo manager written in Go that provides an MCP server for AI agent integration. It tracks tasks with git repository awareness, stores data in SQLite or Markdown files following XDG conventions, and exposes 11 tools, 7 resources, and 6 workflow prompts to Claude and other MCP-compatible agents for full CRUD task management.

Prerequisites

  • Go 1.21 or later (for building from source), or a pre-built binary
  • Claude Desktop or another MCP-compatible client
  • git installed (toki uses git context for repository-aware task tracking)
  • Optional: make (for building from source)
1

Install Toki

Install the toki binary using Go or build from source with make. The Go install method downloads and compiles the latest release automatically.

# Via Go
go install github.com/harperreed/toki/cmd/toki@latest

# From source
git clone https://github.com/harperreed/toki
cd toki
make install
2

Run the setup wizard

Run toki setup to configure your preferred storage backend. New installations default to Markdown files stored at ~/.local/share/toki/. Existing users can choose SQLite for better performance with large task lists.

toki setup
# Interactive wizard asks:
# - Storage backend: SQLite or Markdown files
# - Data directory location (default: ~/.local/share/toki/)
3

Create your first task

Verify the installation by adding a task from the command line. Toki automatically associates tasks with the current git repository when run from inside one.

toki add "Set up Toki MCP integration with Claude"
toki list
4

Configure the MCP server in Claude Desktop

Add the toki MCP server to your Claude Desktop configuration. The 'toki mcp' subcommand starts the MCP server over stdio. On macOS the config file is at ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "toki": {
      "command": "toki",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}
5

Restart Claude Desktop and verify tools

Quit and relaunch Claude Desktop. Ask Claude to list your pending tasks. Claude will use the toki MCP tools to read from your local task database and display your current task list.

Toki Examples

      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }

Prompts to try

Example prompts to manage tasks through Claude using the Toki MCP server.

- "Show me all my overdue tasks and suggest which to prioritise today"
- "Create a project called 'Website Redesign' and add five initial tasks for the discovery phase"
- "Mark all tasks tagged 'review' as done and give me a summary of what was completed this sprint"

Troubleshooting Toki

Claude Desktop cannot find the toki binary after installation

Ensure toki is on your PATH. Run 'which toki' in a terminal. If it prints a path, the issue is that Claude Desktop may not inherit your shell PATH. Set the full path in the config: "command": "/home/yourname/go/bin/toki"

Tasks created in toki CLI are not visible through the MCP server

Verify both the CLI and MCP server are using the same data directory. Run 'toki setup' to confirm the configured path. The default XDG path is ~/.local/share/toki/. Both processes must read from the same database file or Markdown directory.

toki mcp exits immediately when launched by Claude Desktop

Test the MCP server directly: run 'toki mcp' in a terminal and send a JSON-RPC handshake to stdin. If toki exits, check that the data directory exists and is writable. Running 'toki list' first will create any missing directory structure.
