How to Set Up and Use Toggl

The Toggl MCP Server connects AI assistants to the Toggl Track time-tracking API, enabling natural-language control over time entries, projects, and workspaces. Users can start and stop timers, create projects, retrieve time entries for custom date ranges, and perform bulk project updates through conversational prompts. It is especially useful for freelancers and development teams who want to log billable hours or generate activity summaries without leaving their AI coding assistant.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.9+ installed on your system
  • The `uv` package manager installed (https://astral.sh/uv)
  • A Toggl Track account — your login email and password, or your API token from toggl.com/profile
  • An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or VS Code with GitHub Copilot
1

Install uv (if not already installed)

uv is used to manage the Python virtual environment and dependencies for the Toggl MCP server.

curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh
2

Clone the repository and set up the environment

Clone the Toggl MCP server repository and install its dependencies using uv.

git clone https://github.com/abhinav24jha/toggl-mcp-server.git
cd toggl-mcp-server
uv venv
uv pip install --all
3

Create the .env file with your Toggl credentials

Create a .env file inside the project directory. You can authenticate with your email and password, or use your Toggl API token as the password field.

# Email + password authentication
[email protected]
PASSWORD=your_toggl_password

# Or use API token (find it at toggl.com/profile)
# [email protected]
# PASSWORD=api_token
4

Test the server in development mode

Run the server in dev mode to verify it connects to Toggl before wiring it into your MCP client.

EMAIL=your_toggl_email PASSWORD=your_toggl_password mcp dev toggl_mcp_server.py
5

Add the server to your MCP client configuration

Add the following entry to your claude_desktop_config.json or .vscode/mcp.json. Replace the directory path with the absolute path to where you cloned the repository.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "toggl": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uv",
      "args": ["--directory", "/absolute/path/to/toggl-mcp-server", "run", "toggl_mcp_server.py"],
      "env": {
        "EMAIL": "[email protected]",
        "PASSWORD": "your_toggl_password"
      }
    }
  }
}

Toggl Examples

Client configuration

Claude Desktop configuration using uv to run the Toggl MCP server with credentials passed via environment variables.

    }
  }
}

Prompts to try

Example natural-language requests you can send once the Toggl server is connected.

- "Start a timer for working on the API integration project"
- "Stop my current timer"
- "Show me all time entries from the last 7 days"
- "Create a new project called 'Q3 Marketing Campaign' in my workspace"
- "What's my total tracked time for this week?"
- "Delete the time entry for 'standup meeting' from yesterday"

Troubleshooting Toggl

Authentication fails with incorrect email or password

Verify your credentials in the .env file. If you use Google or Apple SSO to log into Toggl, you must use your Toggl API token instead of a password — find it at toggl.com/profile under API Token.

uv command not found when the MCP client starts the server

Make sure uv is installed and on the system PATH that your MCP client uses. The full path to the uv binary (e.g. /home/user/.cargo/bin/uv) can be used as the `command` value in your config.

No workspace data returned by the server

The server operates on your default Toggl workspace. If you have multiple workspaces, ensure the correct one is set as the default in your Toggl account settings at toggl.com.
