How to Set Up and Use Things

The Things MCP Server bridges Claude and other AI assistants with Things 3, the macOS task manager by Cultured Code, via the Things URL scheme and the Things.py library. It exposes over 25 tools covering every major workflow — inbox, today, upcoming, anytime, logbook, projects, areas, tags, search, and bulk updates — letting you manage your entire task system through natural language without ever switching away from your AI assistant.

Prerequisites

  • macOS with Things 3 installed and 'Enable Things URLs' turned on in Things → Settings → General
  • uv Python package manager: install with 'brew install uv'
  • Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or another MCP-compatible client
  • Things 3 auth token enabled (Things → Settings → General → Enable Things URLs → Manage) for bulk operations
1

Install uv if not already present

uv is the recommended Python runner that lets you execute things-mcp without manually managing a virtual environment.

brew install uv
2

Enable Things URLs in the app

Open Things 3, go to Settings → General, and turn on 'Enable Things URLs'. For bulk operations, also click 'Manage' to reveal and copy your auth token.

3

Add the server to Claude Desktop (manual config)

Open ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json and add the things server block.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "things": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["things-mcp"]
    }
  }
}
4

Add to Claude Code via CLI

Register the server globally in Claude Code so it is available across all projects.

claude mcp add-json -s user things '{"command":"uvx","args":["things-mcp"]}'
5

Restart Claude Desktop and verify

Quit and relaunch Claude Desktop. You should see 'Things MCP' in the Search and tools list. Ask 'What's in my Things inbox?' to confirm the connection.

Things Examples

Client configuration

Claude Desktop configuration for Things MCP Server using uvx.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "things": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["things-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Prompts to try

Natural language tasks you can give Claude once Things MCP is connected.

- "What's on my todo list today?"
- "Create a todo to pack for my beach vacation next week with a packing checklist."
- "Show me all tasks in my Work project that are overdue."
- "Evaluate my current todos using the Eisenhower matrix and suggest priorities."
- "Help me conduct a GTD-style weekly review using Things."
- "Which tasks in my Anytime list haven't been modified in over a month?"

Troubleshooting Things

uvx things-mcp fails with 'command not found'

Install uv with 'brew install uv' and ensure ~/.local/bin is in your PATH. Run 'which uvx' to confirm it is accessible, then restart Claude Desktop.

Tools appear but return empty results

Confirm that 'Enable Things URLs' is turned on in Things 3 Settings → General. Also ensure Things 3 is running; the MCP server communicates with the app via URL scheme and requires it to be open.

bulk-update-todos returns an authentication error

Bulk operations require the Things auth token. Go to Things 3 → Settings → General → Enable Things URLs → Manage, copy the token, and ensure the server has access to it. The server reads it automatically if Things URLs are properly enabled.
