How to Set Up and Use Tempo for Jira

The Tempo MCP Server is a TypeScript-based Model Context Protocol server that connects AI assistants to Tempo's time-tracking API for Jira. It exposes tools for creating, editing, deleting, and bulk-creating worklogs, retrieving time logs for date ranges, identifying missing logged days, and generating worklog analytics aggregated by issue, account, day, week, or month. It supports three deployment modes: a no-install Cloudflare Workers remote URL, npx local stdio, and a local git clone for customization.

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+ (only required for local/npx modes)
  • A Jira Cloud instance with Tempo Timesheets installed
  • A Tempo API token (generated in Tempo > Settings > API Integration)
  • A Jira API token and email address for Jira Cloud authentication
  • An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop or Cursor
1

Generate a Tempo API token

In your Jira instance, open Tempo > Settings > API Integration and create a new API token. Copy the token — it will only be shown once.

2

Generate a Jira API token

Visit id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/security/api-tokens and create a new API token for your Jira Cloud account. Note your Jira base URL (e.g., https://your-org.atlassian.net) and email.

3

Configure your MCP client with npx

Add the Tempo MCP server to your Claude Desktop configuration file at ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json using npx for zero-install execution.

4

Restart Claude Desktop

Restart Claude Desktop after saving the config to load the server. The server connects to Tempo and Jira on first use.

5

Verify the connection

Ask Claude to retrieve your recent worklogs to confirm the integration is working correctly.

Prompts to try

Natural language prompts for common time-tracking operations.

- "Show me all my worklogs for this week"
- "Log 2 hours on Jira issue PROJECT-123 for today with description 'code review'"
- "Which working days this month am I missing time entries for?"
- "Give me a summary of hours logged per issue this month"
- "Delete the worklog with ID 98765"

Troubleshooting Tempo for Jira

401 Unauthorized errors when accessing Tempo API

Verify TEMPO_API_TOKEN is correct and not expired. Tempo tokens are scoped — ensure the token has permission to read and write worklogs for your user. Regenerate the token in Tempo > Settings > API Integration if needed.

Jira issue not found errors when logging time

Ensure the issue key matches exactly (e.g., PROJECT-123) and that JIRA_BASE_URL is your full Atlassian domain including https:// (e.g., https://mycompany.atlassian.net). The JIRA_EMAIL must match the account associated with the JIRA_API_TOKEN.

Missing days report includes holidays or weekends as missing

The missing days calculation uses Tempo's user-schedule API, so configured holidays and non-working days are automatically excluded. If the report is incorrect, check your work schedule in Tempo > My Work > Schedule.
