How to Set Up and Use Shortcut
The Shortcut MCP Server connects AI assistants to Shortcut (formerly Clubhouse), a project management platform popular with engineering teams. It exposes over 50 tools covering stories, epics, iterations, objectives, labels, workflows, teams, projects, documents, and users — enabling you to search, create, update, and link work items entirely through natural language. Product managers and engineers use it to manage sprint work, triage bugs, and draft documentation without leaving their AI chat interface.
Prerequisites
- A Shortcut account with an active workspace
- A Shortcut API token (generated in Shortcut Settings > API Tokens)
- Node.js 18 or later (for local/stdio mode)
- An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, or Windsurf
Obtain a Shortcut API token
Log in to Shortcut, go to Settings > API Tokens, and generate a new personal API token. Copy it — you will need it in the configuration step.
Choose hosted or local mode
Shortcut now maintains a hosted remote MCP server at https://mcp.shortcut.com/mcp with OAuth authentication — no API token or local setup required. For clients that require stdio (Claude Code, Windsurf, Zed), run the package locally via npx instead.
Configure for hosted mode (Cursor / VS Code)
For Cursor, add to ~/.cursor/mcp.json. For VS Code add to your mcp.json as an http-type server. You will be prompted to authorize via OAuth on first use.

}Configure for local/stdio mode (Claude Desktop, Claude Code)
For clients requiring stdio transport, run the npm package locally and supply your API token. Optionally set SHORTCUT_TOOLS to restrict which tool groups are enabled.

}
}
}
}Restart your client and verify
Restart your MCP client. The Shortcut tools should appear. Ask your AI assistant to list your current stories or fetch a specific story by ID to verify the connection.

}Prompts to try
Sample prompts covering the main capabilities: searching stories, creating work items, managing epics, and checking iteration status.
- "Search for all open stories assigned to me in the current iteration"
- "Create a new story called 'Fix login timeout bug' in the Backend project with high priority"
- "Show me all epics that are currently in progress"
- "Get the details and comments for story sc-1234"
- "List all active iterations for the mobile team"
- "Assign story sc-5678 to me and move it to In Progress"Troubleshooting Shortcut
Authentication errors or '401 Unauthorized' responses
Verify that SHORTCUT_API_TOKEN is set to a valid, active token. Tokens are workspace-scoped — ensure the token belongs to the workspace you are targeting. Regenerate a token in Shortcut Settings > API Tokens if needed.
Too many tools overwhelm the model context window
Use the SHORTCUT_TOOLS environment variable to restrict available tools to only the entity types you need, for example 'SHORTCUT_TOOLS=stories,epics'. Individual tools can also be specified by full name like 'stories-get-by-id'.
Hosted OAuth flow fails or loops
Ensure your client supports HTTP-based MCP servers. Cursor and VS Code support this natively. For stdio-only clients (Claude Desktop, Windsurf, Zed), switch to the local npx configuration with a personal API token instead of the hosted URL.
