How to Set Up and Use Sanity (Legacy)

The legacy Sanity MCP server (@sanity/mcp-server) was an npm-based local MCP integration for the Sanity headless CMS. This package is now deprecated and archived; Sanity has replaced it with an improved hosted remote MCP server at mcp.sanity.io that offers OAuth authentication, Streamable HTTP transport, and continuously updated tools with no local Node.js setup required.

  • A Sanity.io account and at least one Sanity project

Use the remote Sanity MCP server instead

The local @sanity/mcp-server package is deprecated. Sanity now provides a hosted remote MCP server at https://mcp.sanity.io with OAuth authentication and no local setup required.

Add the remote server to your MCP client configuration

Open your MCP client configuration and point it at the remote Sanity MCP server using HTTP transport. No API tokens are needed—OAuth authentication is handled automatically in the browser.

Troubleshooting Sanity (Legacy)

OAuth authentication does not complete or browser does not open

Ensure your MCP client has access to open browser windows, and that you are logged into your Sanity account at sanity.io. Try visiting https://mcp.sanity.io directly in your browser to confirm the service is reachable.

Tools are unavailable after switching from the old local @sanity/mcp-server

Remove the old local server entry (which used 'npx sanity') from your MCP config and replace it with the remote HTTP config pointing to https://mcp.sanity.io as shown in the configuration example.

MCP client does not support type: http transport

Check that your MCP client is updated to a recent version. Claude Desktop, Cursor, and VS Code all support HTTP transport. For older clients that only support stdio, visit mcp.sanity.io for alternative connection options.
