How to Set Up and Use Rowbound

Rowbound is an open-source CLI and MCP server that adds data enrichment pipelines directly to Google Sheets. It lets you define waterfall enrichment steps — calling external HTTP APIs, running AI models, applying conditional logic, and pulling data from other sheets — and then execute those pipelines row by row. Teams use it to enrich lead lists, automate data augmentation, and trigger spreadsheet workflows through natural language via Claude or other MCP clients.

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 22 or later installed
  • Google Workspace CLI (gws) installed and authenticated for Sheets access
  • A Google account with the target spreadsheet accessible
  • API keys for any external HTTP APIs you plan to call in your enrichment pipelines
  • An MCP client such as Claude Desktop (optional — the CLI works standalone)
1

Install the Google Workspace CLI and authenticate

Rowbound uses gws to read and write Google Sheets. Install it globally and complete the OAuth login flow.

npm install -g @googleworkspace/cli && gws auth setup && gws auth login
2

Install Rowbound globally

Install the Rowbound CLI from npm. This also provides the 'rowbound mcp' command used to start the MCP server.

npm install -g github:eliasstravik/rowbound
3

Initialize a pipeline on your spreadsheet

Pass your Google Sheets spreadsheet ID (from its URL) to create the initial pipeline configuration sheet.

rowbound init <your-spreadsheet-id>
4

Set API keys for enrichment steps

Store credentials for the external APIs your pipeline will call. These are saved globally and referenced by name in your pipeline config.

rowbound env set API_KEY=your_key_here
5

Run the pipeline (dry-run first)

Preview which cells would be updated without writing anything. Remove --dry-run when you are ready to apply changes.

rowbound run <your-spreadsheet-id> --dry-run
6

Add the MCP server to Claude Desktop

Start Rowbound as an MCP server so Claude can manage pipelines, run enrichments, and query run history through natural language.

      "command": "rowbound",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }

Rowbound Examples

Client configuration

Claude Desktop configuration that starts Rowbound in MCP server mode. The gws authentication state is inherited from the system, so no additional credentials are needed in the config.

  "mcpServers": {
    "rowbound": {
      "command": "rowbound",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Prompts to try

Manage Google Sheets enrichment pipelines through natural language when Rowbound is connected as an MCP server.

- "Initialize a Rowbound pipeline on spreadsheet 1BxiMVs0XRA5nFMdKvBdBZjgmUUqptlbs74OgVE2upms"
- "Run the enrichment pipeline and show me a dry-run preview of changes"
- "Add a new HTTP API action that calls api.clearbit.com/v2/people/find for each email in column B"
- "Start watching the spreadsheet for new rows and enrich them automatically"
- "Show me the run history for the last 10 pipeline executions"

Troubleshooting Rowbound

Authentication fails when running rowbound init — 'not logged in' error

Run 'gws auth login' again to refresh the Google OAuth token. If this is the first time, run 'gws auth setup' first to configure the OAuth credentials before logging in.

Pipeline runs but external API calls return authentication errors

Verify the API key was saved with 'rowbound env list'. Key names in your pipeline config must exactly match what was set with 'rowbound env set'. For local development with HTTP (non-HTTPS) endpoints, set ROWBOUND_ALLOW_HTTP=true in your environment.

rowbound command not found after npm install

Ensure your global npm bin directory is on your PATH. Run 'npm bin -g' to find it and add it to your PATH in ~/.zshrc or ~/.bashrc. Alternatively use 'npx rowbound mcp' in the args array of your MCP client config.
