How to Set Up and Use OmniFocus

OmniFocus MCP is a macOS server that connects Claude and other MCP clients to the OmniFocus task manager via AppleScript automation. It exposes 45 tools covering full CRUD for tasks, projects, tags, and folders, plus advanced filtering, batch operations, and four guided review workflows. Three implementations are available — Rust (production-recommended), Python, and TypeScript — all sharing identical tool names and response schemas.

Prerequisites

  • macOS with OmniFocus installed and actively running
  • Automation permission granted in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation for your MCP client
  • Homebrew installed for the recommended Rust binary installation
  • An MCP client such as Claude Desktop or Cursor
1

Install the Rust binary via Homebrew

The Homebrew tap installs the production-recommended Rust implementation. For Python or TypeScript alternatives, clone the repository and follow the per-language instructions in its subdirectories.

brew tap vitalyrodnenko/omnifocus-mcp && brew install omnifocus-mcp
2

Grant automation permission

On first run OmniFocus MCP needs permission to control OmniFocus via AppleScript. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation and enable access for your terminal or MCP client application.

3

Add the server to your MCP client

Edit your client configuration file. On Claude Desktop this is ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "omnifocus": {
      "command": "omnifocus-mcp",
      "args": []
    }
  }
}
4

Restart your MCP client

Fully quit and reopen Claude Desktop (or your chosen client) so it picks up the new server configuration and establishes the stdio connection.

5

Verify the connection

Ask the AI to list your OmniFocus inbox. A successful response confirms the server is running and automation permissions are in place.

OmniFocus Examples

Client configuration

Minimal Claude Desktop configuration using the Homebrew-installed Rust binary. No API keys or environment variables are required — the server uses AppleScript to talk to the running OmniFocus app.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "omnifocus": {
      "command": "omnifocus-mcp",
      "args": []
    }
  }
}

Prompts to try

OmniFocus MCP supports natural language task and project management across all 45 exposed tools.

- "Show me everything in my OmniFocus inbox"
- "Create a new task called 'Review Q3 budget' due next Friday and add it to the Finance project"
- "List all flagged tasks that are overdue"
- "Run my Daily Review and walk me through each inbox item"
- "Move all tasks tagged 'waiting' to the On Hold project"

Troubleshooting OmniFocus

The server connects but returns 'not authorized to send Apple events' errors

Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation. Find your terminal app or MCP client in the list and enable the OmniFocus checkbox. You may need to remove and re-add the permission if it was previously denied.

OmniFocus MCP command not found after Homebrew install

Run 'brew link omnifocus-mcp' to ensure the binary is symlinked into your PATH. Verify with 'which omnifocus-mcp'. If using the Python or TypeScript implementation, ensure the respective runtime (Python 3.11+ or Node.js 20+) is installed.

Tasks or projects created via MCP are not appearing in OmniFocus

Confirm OmniFocus is running (not just installed) before invoking any tools. The server communicates via AppleScript which requires the OmniFocus process to be active. Check that the correct OmniFocus database is open if you use multiple databases.
