How to Set Up and Use Metis

Metis is a Flight Levels work management system with a built-in MCP server that allows AI agents to create, read, update, and transition work items across the strategic, coordination, and operational levels. Install Metis

Run the official install script or download the binary manually from GitHub Releases for your platform.

Remove macOS quarantine (macOS only)

If on macOS, remove the Gatekeeper quarantine attribute from the app bundle before running.

Launch the Metis app once

Open the Metis desktop app at least once to initialize local project storage. This step is required before the MCP server can access project data.

Add the Metis MCP server to Claude using the mcp add command with user scope and stdio transport.

Troubleshooting Metis

metis mcp returns 'no project found' error

The Metis MCP server requires the desktop app to have been launched at least once to set up local storage. Open the Metis GUI, create or open a project, then restart the MCP server.

metis binary not found after installation

Check that the install script placed the binary in a directory on your PATH (typically /usr/local/bin or ~/bin). Run which metis to verify. If not found, add the install directory to your shell's PATH in ~/.zshrc or ~/.bashrc.

/metis-ralph autonomous workflow gets stuck

Use /cancel-metis-ralph to stop a stuck autonomous execution. Ensure the task short code is correct (e.g., PROJ-T-0001) and the task exists. Re-run metis index to refresh the code search index if documents seem missing.
