How to Set Up and Use Taskade

The Taskade MCP server connects AI assistants to the Taskade productivity platform, exposing over 57 tools across 7 categories that cover workspace management, project and task CRUD, AI agent creation, template-based workflows, and media management. It uses your Taskade Personal Access Token to authenticate against the Taskade API, enabling Claude to create tasks, assign team members, set due dates, build AI agents with custom knowledge bases, generate projects from templates, and query the full workspace hierarchy — all without leaving the chat interface. Teams and individuals who use Taskade for project management can use this server to automate repetitive operations and integrate task management into AI-powered workflows.

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+ with npx available
  • A Taskade account (free or paid) at https://www.taskade.com/
  • A Taskade Personal Access Token from https://www.taskade.com/settings/api
  • An MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or Windsurf
1

Generate a Taskade API key

Log in to Taskade, navigate to Settings > API, and create a new Personal Access Token. Copy and store it securely — you will need it in your MCP configuration.

2

Test the server with npx

Verify the server package runs correctly by executing it directly. It will start and wait for MCP client connections.

TASKADE_API_KEY=your-api-key-here npx -y @taskade/mcp-server
3

Add to your MCP client configuration

Register the server in claude_desktop_config.json (or your client's equivalent config file) with your API key in the env block.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "taskade": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@taskade/mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "TASKADE_API_KEY": "your-api-key-here"
      }
    }
  }
}
4

Alternatively, use the remote MCP endpoint (no install required)

Taskade also offers a zero-install remote MCP server. Add https://www.taskade.com/mcp as a remote server URL in your MCP client, then authorize via OAuth. This works with Claude web, Desktop, mobile, and Claude Code.

5

Verify connection and list workspaces

After restarting your MCP client, ask Claude to list your Taskade workspaces to confirm the server is authenticated and connected.

      }
    }
  }
}

Prompts to try

Sample requests spanning the 57 tools across workspaces, tasks, AI agents, and templates.

- "List all my Taskade workspaces and show the projects in the Engineering workspace."
- "Create a task titled 'Review PR #42' in the Sprint project, set priority to high, and assign it to me."
- "Create a new AI support agent trained on the documentation project and enable public access."
- "Generate a new sprint project from the 'Agile Sprint' template in my Engineering workspace."
- "Show all overdue tasks assigned to me across all projects."

Troubleshooting Taskade

Authentication fails with 'Unauthorized' or 401 error

Verify that TASKADE_API_KEY is set to a valid Personal Access Token from https://www.taskade.com/settings/api. Tokens for the API must be Personal Access Tokens, not OAuth client secrets. Regenerate the token if it has been revoked.

Server starts but returns empty lists for workspaces or projects

Confirm your Taskade account has at least one workspace and project. Also check that the API key has the necessary scopes — Personal Access Tokens in Taskade should have full read/write access by default.

npx download is slow or times out on first run

The first run downloads the @taskade/mcp-server package. If it times out, check your internet connection and npm registry access. You can pre-install with 'npm install -g @taskade/mcp-server' and then use 'taskade-mcp-server' as the command instead of npx.
