How to Set Up and Use Salesforce
The mcp-salesforce server provides a complete integration between Claude Desktop and Salesforce CRM, enabling AI assistants to perform SOQL queries, create and update records, describe object schemas, and create data backups — all through an OAuth 2.0 Connected App flow. It supports any standard or custom Salesforce object, includes a time-machine feature for comparing data across backup snapshots, and stores credentials securely in a local file rather than requiring environment variables.
Prerequisites
- Node.js 16 or later installed
- A Salesforce org (Developer Edition is free at developer.salesforce.com)
- A Salesforce Connected App with OAuth enabled and callback URL set to http://localhost:9876/callback
- The Connected App's Consumer Key (Client ID) and Consumer Secret
- Claude Desktop or another MCP-compatible client
Create a Salesforce Connected App
In Salesforce Setup, go to App Manager and create a new Connected App. Enable OAuth settings, set the callback URL to http://localhost:9876/callback, and add the 'api' and 'refresh_token, offline_access' OAuth scopes. Save and copy the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret.
Add the server to Claude Desktop config
Edit your Claude Desktop config file to add the mcp-salesforce server. No environment variables are needed — credentials are stored by the setup tool after first run.

In a Claude conversation, ask Claude to authenticate with Salesforce. The salesforce_setup tool will prompt you for your Consumer Key, Consumer Secret, and Instance URL, then open a browser for OAuth login. Credentials are saved to ~/.mcp-salesforce.json with restricted permissions.

OAuth callback fails with 'redirect_uri_mismatch' error
In Salesforce Setup, verify that the Connected App's callback URL is exactly 'http://localhost:9876/callback' (no trailing slash, http not https). Save the Connected App and wait 2-10 minutes for the changes to propagate before retrying.
SOQL queries return INVALID_SESSION_ID or authentication errors
The OAuth refresh token may have expired. Delete ~/.mcp-salesforce.json and re-run the authentication flow by asking Claude to 'Authenticate with Salesforce'. Check that your Connected App's 'Refresh Token Policy' is set to allow long-lived tokens.
The salesforce_learn tool takes a long time or times out on large orgs
Large Salesforce orgs with hundreds of custom objects can take several minutes to analyze. The results are cached in ~/.mcp-salesforce-cache/ so subsequent calls are fast. If it times out, try running it during off-peak hours when API limits are less constrained.
