How to Set Up and Use Maya

MayaMCP connects Autodesk Maya to AI assistants like Claude Desktop through the Model Context Protocol, enabling natural language control of 3D modeling, animation, and scene management operations. It exposes tools for creating and manipulating objects, running mesh operations (extrude, bevel, boolean, subdivide), applying materials (lambert, phong, wood, marble, chrome, glass), working with NURBS curves, and generating complete scenes such as cities, forests, and interiors. 3D artists and technical directors use it to automate repetitive Maya workflows and prototype scene setups through conversational prompts.

Prerequisites

  • Autodesk Maya 2023 or 2025 installed (tested versions)
  • Python 3.8+ available on your system (Maya ships with its own Python, but the MCP server runs externally)
  • pip to install Python dependencies from requirements.txt
  • An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop
  • The MayaMCP repository cloned locally
1

Clone the repository

Clone the MayaMCP repository to your local machine.

git clone https://github.com/PatrickPalmer/MayaMCP.git
cd MayaMCP
2

Create a Python virtual environment and install dependencies

Create an isolated Python virtual environment and install the required packages. Use the requirements.txt provided in the repository.

python -m venv .venv
# macOS/Linux:
source .venv/bin/activate
# Windows:
.venv\Scripts\activate.bat

pip install -r requirements.txt
3

Start Autodesk Maya

Open Maya 2023 or 2025. The MayaMCP server communicates with Maya through its command port, so Maya must be running before you use any MCP tools. No Maya plugin installation is required — the server uses Maya's built-in scripting interface.

4

Configure your MCP client

Add MayaMCP to your claude_desktop_config.json using the absolute path to the Python executable inside your virtual environment and the absolute path to the server script.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "maya-mcp": {
      "command": "/absolute/path/to/MayaMCP/.venv/bin/python",
      "args": ["/absolute/path/to/MayaMCP/src/maya_mcp_server.py"]
    }
  }
}
5

Restart Claude Desktop and test

Restart Claude Desktop with Maya running. Tools include list_objects_by_type, create_object, get/set_object_attributes, mesh_operations, create_material, create_curve, curve_modeling, organize_objects, and generate_scene. Try asking Claude to create a simple object to verify the connection.

Maya Examples

Client configuration

Claude Desktop config for MayaMCP on macOS, pointing to the virtual environment Python.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "maya-mcp": {
      "command": "/Users/you/MayaMCP/.venv/bin/python",
      "args": ["/Users/you/MayaMCP/src/maya_mcp_server.py"]
    }
  }
}

Prompts to try

Example natural language prompts for controlling Maya through the MCP server.

- "Create a sphere in Maya and apply a chrome material to it"
- "List all polygon objects in the current scene"
- "Generate a living room scene with furniture"
- "Extrude the selected face on the cube by 2 units"
- "Create a NURBS curve and loft it with a second curve to form a surface"
- "Group all objects in the scene and center the pivot point"

Troubleshooting Maya

MCP server cannot connect to Maya or commands fail silently

Maya must be running before the MCP server attempts to connect. Ensure Maya's command port is open. If the server uses a socket connection, verify no firewall is blocking the port. Restart Maya and then restart your MCP client.

Import errors when starting the server: missing modules from requirements.txt

Ensure you activated the virtual environment before installing and that pip installed into the correct .venv. The MCP config must point to .venv/bin/python (not the system Python). Run `pip list` inside the venv to confirm packages are installed.

Tools work on Maya 2023/2025 but not on other versions

MayaMCP has only been tested with Maya 2023 and 2025. Older versions may have API differences. Check the GitHub Issues page for version-specific workarounds or consider upgrading Maya.
