How to Set Up and Use HubSpot

HubSpot MCP Server is a comprehensive Python MCP integration for HubSpot CRM that exposes 15+ tools covering contacts, companies, deals, conversations, and semantic search across CRM data using a local FAISS vector index. It supports three transport protocols — stdio, SSE, and streamable-HTTP — making it suitable for both Claude Desktop embedding and standalone deployment behind an HTTP endpoint. Built-in vector storage caches retrieved CRM data locally, enabling fast semantic search and reducing API rate-limit pressure for teams running frequent queries.

Prerequisites

  • A HubSpot account with a Private App access token
  • HubSpot Private App scopes: crm.objects.contacts (read/write), crm.objects.companies (read/write), and sales-email-read
  • Docker installed (recommended) or Python 3.10+ for local execution
  • An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or any SSE/HTTP MCP client
1

Create a HubSpot Private App and get an access token

In HubSpot, go to Settings > Integrations > Private Apps, create a new app, enable the required CRM scopes, and copy the generated access token.

2

Run the server via Docker

Pull and start the pre-built Docker image, passing your HubSpot access token. Mount a volume for the FAISS index to persist between container restarts.

docker run -e HUBSPOT_ACCESS_TOKEN=your_token \
  -v /path/to/local/storage:/storage \
  buryhuang/mcp-hubspot:latest
3

Alternatively install via Smithery

Smithery can install and configure the server for Claude Desktop in one step.

npx -y @smithery/cli@latest install mcp-hubspot --client claude
4

Configure the MCP client for stdio transport

For Claude Desktop, add the server to claude_desktop_config.json using the Docker command as the MCP process.

5

Use SSE or HTTP transport for multi-client deployments

For shared deployments or VS Code Copilot Chat, run the server with an HTTP or SSE transport and point clients at the endpoint URL rather than embedding it as a subprocess.

Prompts to try

These prompts use the 15+ CRM tools available through the HubSpot MCP server.

- "List the most recently active companies in my HubSpot CRM."
- "Create a contact for Alex Johnson at TechCorp with email [email protected]."
- "What deals are currently in the pipeline and what stage are they at?"
- "Show me the recent email conversations we've had with Globex Corp."
- "Search my CRM for any contacts or companies related to enterprise SaaS."
- "Create a company record for Initech in the software industry."

Troubleshooting HubSpot

HubSpot API returns 403 errors on contact or company tools

Verify that your Private App token includes crm.objects.contacts and crm.objects.companies scopes with both read and write permissions. You must regenerate the token after adding scopes in the HubSpot UI.

Semantic search returns no results or irrelevant matches

The FAISS vector index is built lazily from retrieved CRM data. Fetch some contacts and companies first (e.g., 'show me active contacts') before running semantic searches so the index has data to search against.

Docker container exits immediately when used as stdio MCP process

The -i flag is required for stdio transport so Docker keeps stdin open. Ensure claude_desktop_config.json includes '-i' in the args array before 'buryhuang/mcp-hubspot:latest'.
