How to Set Up and Use Home Assistant Vibecode Agent
The Home Assistant Vibecode Agent is an MCP server and Home Assistant add-on that connects AI-powered IDEs — including Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code — directly to your Home Assistant instance, enabling natural language creation and debugging of automations, dashboard design, theme customization, and configuration management. It provides native access to the Home Assistant API with built-in Git versioning so every AI-generated change can be reviewed and rolled back safely. Engineers and power users who prefer coding their smart home in a professional IDE rather than the HA UI use this to accelerate Home Assistant development.
Prerequisites
- A running Home Assistant OS or Supervised installation
- A Home Assistant long-lived access token (Profile > Security > Long-lived access tokens)
- Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code with MCP support, or another MCP-enabled IDE
- Docker and Docker Compose for standalone mode (alternative to the HA add-on)
Add the repository to Home Assistant add-on store
In Home Assistant, navigate to Settings > Add-ons > Add-on Store, click the three-dot menu, select Repositories, and add the URL for the vibecode agent repository.
# Repository URL to add in HA Add-on Store:
https://github.com/Coolver/home-assistant-vibecode-agentInstall and start the add-on
Find the HA Vibecode Agent in the add-on store after adding the repository, click Install, then Start. The MCP server will be available at http://homeassistant.local:8099.
Alternative: Run standalone with Docker
For non-HA OS setups, clone the repository and run with Docker Compose. Set HA_URL, HA_TOKEN, and HA_CONFIG_PATH in the .env file before starting.
git clone https://github.com/Coolver/home-assistant-vibecode-agent.git
cd home-assistant-vibecode-agent
cp .env.example .env
# Edit .env: set HA_URL, HA_TOKEN, HA_CONFIG_PATH
docker compose -f docker-compose.standalone.yml up -dRetrieve your agent API key
After the add-on starts, find your agent API key in the add-on logs or configuration. This key is used as a bearer token in the MCP client Authorization header.
Configure your MCP client
Add the vibecode agent to your MCP client configuration, pointing to the add-on HTTP endpoint. The server uses bearer token authentication.

Client configuration
Add this to your claude_desktop_config.json. The server connects over HTTP with bearer token authentication. Replace the host and token with your actual values.

Use these prompts in Claude Code or your MCP-enabled IDE to manage Home Assistant through natural language.
- "Show me all climate entities and their current states."
- "Create a smart lighting automation that dims lights to 30% when a movie starts on the living room TV."
- "Design a new Lovelace dashboard for the kitchen with energy monitoring cards."
- "Analyze my heating automations and suggest efficiency improvements."
- "Install the HACS integration for Mushroom cards and restart Home Assistant."Troubleshooting Home Assistant Vibecode Agent
Cannot connect to http://homeassistant.local:8099
If mDNS does not resolve homeassistant.local on your network, use the IP address of your Home Assistant host instead (e.g., http://192.168.1.100:8099). Verify the add-on is running in the HA add-on panel.
Authentication fails with 401 Unauthorized
Confirm the Authorization header uses the agent API key shown in the add-on logs, not your Home Assistant long-lived token. The agent generates its own API key distinct from the HA token.
Changes deployed by the AI are not visible in Home Assistant
The agent writes changes to configuration files and may require a Home Assistant reload or restart to take effect. Ask the agent to reload the relevant configuration domain (e.g., 'reload automations') after making changes.
