How to Set Up and Use HeadHunter

The HeadHunter MCP Server integrates the hh.ru (HeadHunter) job platform API with AI assistants like Claude Code, enabling natural-language job searching, resume management, and application submission on Russia's largest employment platform. The server exposes ten tools covering vacancy search with rich filters, employer details, similar job discovery, geographic reference data, and full application tracking. Developers, recruiters, and job seekers can automate their entire job search workflow through conversational prompts without manually navigating the website.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.9+ and pip installed on your system
  • A HeadHunter developer account — register an application at dev.hh.ru to obtain HH_CLIENT_ID and HH_CLIENT_SECRET
  • HH_APP_TOKEN and HH_REDIRECT_URI from your registered application
  • An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code
1

Clone the repository and create a virtual environment

Clone the HeadHunter MCP server and set up an isolated Python environment.

git clone https://github.com/gmen1057/headhunter-mcp-server.git
cd headhunter-mcp-server
python -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
2

Install dependencies

Install all required Python packages listed in the requirements file.

pip install -r requirements.txt
3

Register an application at dev.hh.ru

Go to https://dev.hh.ru/admin and create a new application. Copy the Client ID, Client Secret, and your redirect URI. Generate an application token to use as HH_APP_TOKEN.

4

Set your environment variables

Export the required HeadHunter API credentials as environment variables, or add them to a .env file in the project root.

export HH_CLIENT_ID=your_client_id
export HH_CLIENT_SECRET=your_client_secret
export HH_APP_TOKEN=your_app_token
export HH_REDIRECT_URI=https://your-redirect-uri.com
5

Add the server to your MCP client configuration

Register the server in ~/.claude.json (for Claude Code) or claude_desktop_config.json. Use the absolute path to the venv Python interpreter and server.py.

Prompts to try

- "Show details for vacancy 126209046"
- "List all my uploaded resumes"
- "Apply to vacancy 126209046 with resume ID abc123 and cover letter 'I am a strong fit for this role'"

- "Show my job application history"

Troubleshooting HeadHunter

API returns 403 Forbidden on vacancy search

Ensure HH_APP_TOKEN is a valid application token generated for your registered app at dev.hh.ru. Tokens expire — regenerate a new one if it has been more than a few hours.

OAuth redirect URI mismatch error

The HH_REDIRECT_URI value must exactly match the redirect URI registered for your application in the dev.hh.ru admin panel, including the protocol and any trailing slash.

Server fails to start with ModuleNotFoundError

Verify your virtual environment is activated and that you installed dependencies with `pip install -r requirements.txt` inside it. Use the venv Python binary explicitly in your MCP config.
