How to Set Up and Use Open eClass

The Open eClass MCP Server provides a Model Context Protocol interface to the Open eClass academic learning platform used by many Greek universities. It allows AI assistants to authenticate with an eClass instance, retrieve enrolled courses, and manage sessions—all with credentials stored locally in a .env file and never transmitted as tool call parameters, making it a privacy-conscious integration for students and educators.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10 or later installed
  • uv package manager installed (recommended) or pip
  • Valid Open eClass account credentials (username and password)
  • Access to an Open eClass instance (default: https://eclass.uoa.gr)

Clone the repository

Clone the eclass-mcp-server repository from GitHub and navigate into the project directory.

Install dependencies with uv

Install all project dependencies using uv sync. This creates an isolated environment with all required packages.

Configure your credentials

Copy the example environment file and fill in your eClass username, password, and optionally your institution's eClass URL and SSO domain.

Troubleshooting Open eClass

Login fails with authentication error

Verify ECLASS_USERNAME and ECLASS_PASSWORD in .env are correct. If your institution uses a custom SSO domain, set ECLASS_SSO_DOMAIN and ECLASS_SSO_PROTOCOL to match your institution's SSO endpoint. Test login manually via browser first.

uv sync fails with dependency resolution errors

Ensure you are using uv 0.4+ ('uv --version') and Python 3.10+. If uv is not available, fall back to 'pip install -e .[dev]' from the project root.

get_courses returns empty list after successful login

The get_courses tool requires a prior successful call to the login tool in the same session. Sessions are stored in-memory and reset when the server restarts. Call the login tool first, then get_courses.
