Domainstack is an all-in-one domain name intelligence platform that surfaces WHOIS/RDAP data, DNS records, SSL certificates, hosting and email provider detection, SEO metadata, and server-side screenshots for any domain through natural language queries. Its MCP integration lets AI clients ask questions about domains conversationally, powered by durable streaming. Developers and domain researchers use it to investigate domain health, ownership, and infrastructure without switching between multiple lookup tools.

Prerequisites

  • Node.js 18+ and pnpm installed
  • A PostgreSQL database (DATABASE_URL connection string)
  • An MCP client such as Claude Desktop or Cursor
  • Optional: Vercel account for hosted deployment

Clone the repository

Clone the domainstack.io monorepo and install dependencies with pnpm.

Configure environment variables

Copy the example env file in apps/web and fill in your PostgreSQL connection string and any additional optional keys listed in .env.example.

Run database migrations

Apply the Drizzle ORM migrations to set up the schema in your PostgreSQL database.

Start the development server

Run the Next.js application locally. The app and its MCP endpoint will be available on localhost:3000.

Add the MCP server to your client config

Point your MCP client to the running domainstack instance. The server exposes domain intelligence via the MCP endpoint at /api/mcp.

Troubleshooting Domainstack

Database migration fails with a connection error

Verify DATABASE_URL in apps/web/.env.local is a valid PostgreSQL connection string and that the database server is reachable. Run `psql $DATABASE_URL` to test connectivity before running pnpm db:migrate.

Domain lookups return empty or partial results

Some RDAP and WHOIS providers rate-limit unauthenticated requests. Ensure the development server has outbound internet access. Check the browser network tab or server logs for upstream API errors.

MCP tool is not visible in the client after configuration

Confirm the local Next.js server is running on port 3000 before starting the MCP client. Restart the client fully after editing the config file.
