How to Set Up and Use Dataverse Skills

Dataverse Skills is a collection of AI agent plugins (skills) maintained by Microsoft that wrap the Dataverse MCP server, PAC CLI, Dataverse Python SDK, and Dataverse CLI into eight specialist skills: dv-connect, dv-query, dv-data, dv-metadata, dv-solution, dv-admin, dv-security, and dv-overview. These skills give coding agents — Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and GitHub Copilot — the ability to query records, create tables, manage security roles, export solutions, and administer entire Power Platform environments through natural language. The dv-connect skill handles authentication and tool installation automatically, making setup straightforward even for developers unfamiliar with the PAC CLI.

Prerequisites

  • Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Codex CLI as your AI coding agent
  • A Microsoft Power Platform or Dynamics 365 environment with appropriate permissions
  • Internet access to the Power Platform endpoints your environment uses
  • Docker (optional) if running the Dataverse MCP server locally
1

Install the plugin for your agent

Choose the installation method that matches your AI agent. Claude Code uses the claude-plugins-official channel; Copilot uses awesome-copilot; Codex CLI uses the marketplace.

# Claude Code
/plugin install dataverse@claude-plugins-official

# GitHub Copilot
/plugin install dataverse@awesome-copilot

# Codex CLI
codex plugin marketplace add microsoft/Dataverse-skills
2

Run dv-connect to authenticate

After installing the plugin, ask your agent to run the dv-connect skill. It will install any missing CLI tools (PAC CLI, Dataverse CLI), prompt you to authenticate, and register the local MCP server.

3

Verify the connection

Ask the agent to list tables or run a simple query to confirm the connection is working.

4

Install for Cursor (manual)

Clone the repository and copy the plugin directory to the Cursor plugins folder for local installation.

git clone https://github.com/microsoft/Dataverse-skills
# macOS/Linux:
cp -r Dataverse-skills/.github/plugins/dataverse ~/.cursor/plugins/local/dataverse/

Dataverse Skills Examples

Client configuration

After running the plugin install command, the agent registers the MCP server automatically. For manual configuration with Claude Desktop, use the dataverse MCP server endpoint provided after dv-connect runs.

Prompts to try

Natural-language prompts that map to the eight Dataverse skills.

- "Show me all open deals over $100K closing this quarter"
- "Create a customer feedback table with name, rating, and comment columns"
- "Import this CSV file into the contacts table"
- "Export the Sales solution and promote it to the production environment"
- "Bulk delete all activities older than January 2024"
- "Add [email protected] to the Sales Manager security role on the dev environment"

Troubleshooting Dataverse Skills

dv-connect fails with authentication errors

Ensure you have the Power Platform admin or system administrator role in the target environment. Run pac auth create manually to verify your credentials work before retrying dv-connect.

Plugin not found after install command

Confirm your agent version supports the plugin marketplace. Claude Code requires a recent version; run claude --version and update if needed. For Codex, run codex plugin marketplace list to verify the add command succeeded.

dv-query returns 'No tables found' for an environment that has data

The dv-connect step must target the correct environment URL. Ask the agent to run dv-connect again and provide your full environment URL (e.g., https://yourorg.crm.dynamics.com) explicitly.
