Authentication fails with 401 Unauthorized
Verify the PASS field in wp-sites.json uses the Application Password (space-separated blocks), not your WordPress login password. Also confirm the user has Administrator role and that the REST API is not blocked by a security plugin.
WP_SITES_PATH is not found or throws ENOENT
Ensure the value is an absolute path (not ~ or relative). On macOS, use /Users/yourname/... and verify the file exists with: ls -la /absolute/path/to/wp-sites.json
Tools are listed but requests return 403 Forbidden
Some WordPress security plugins (Wordfence, iThemes Security) block REST API access by IP or require an authenticated session cookie. Whitelist your IP in the security plugin settings or disable REST API restrictions temporarily to test.
