How to Set Up and Use Carbon ERP
Carbon is an open-source ERP, MES (Manufacturing Execution System), and QMS platform purpose-built for complex manufacturing operations including configure-to-order, contract manufacturing, and multi-level assembly. It ships with built-in MCP Client/Server support, enabling AI agents to query production data, manage bills of materials, track work orders, and automate quality workflows through natural language. Carbon runs on a React Router + Supabase + PostgreSQL stack and is designed for manufacturers who need full data ownership and customizable workflows without the lock-in of traditional ERP vendors.
Prerequisites
- Node.js LTS and pnpm (corepack enable) for local development
- nvm for managing the required Node.js version
- Docker (for local Supabase, PostgreSQL, and Redis services via the crbn CLI)
- Supabase project credentials: SUPABASE_URL, SUPABASE_ANON_KEY, SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY
- Optional: Stripe keys (STRIPE_SECRET_KEY), Resend email credentials, and PostHog analytics keys for full feature support
Clone the repository and install dependencies
Clone the Carbon monorepo, enable corepack to use the correct pnpm version, switch to the required Node.js version, and install all workspace dependencies.
git clone https://github.com/crbnos/carbon.git
cd carbon
corepack enable
nvm use
pnpm installRun the setup script to initialize the local environment
The setup script configures the local Supabase instance, applies database migrations, and generates environment variable templates.
./setup.shConfigure environment variables
Copy the generated .env.example to .env and fill in your Supabase project credentials and any optional third-party service keys.
SUPABASE_URL=https://your-project.supabase.co
SUPABASE_ANON_KEY=your-anon-key
SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY=your-service-role-key
REDIS_URL=redis://localhost:6379
RESEND_API_KEY=your-resend-key
STRIPE_SECRET_KEY=your-stripe-keyStart the development stack
Use pnpm dev to boot the full stack. The crbn CLI manages per-worktree Docker services for the local Supabase and Redis instances.
pnpm devAccess the Carbon ERP interface
Once the stack is running, open the web interface in your browser. The default local URL is http://localhost:3000. Configure your manufacturing company profile on first login.
open http://localhost:3000Connect an AI client via MCP
Carbon includes MCP Client/Server support. Configure your AI client (Claude Desktop, etc.) to connect to Carbon's MCP server so agents can query items, work orders, and BOM data.
Carbon ERP Examples
Client configuration
Connect an AI client to Carbon's MCP server. Replace the API URL and key with your Carbon instance credentials.

Use AI agents connected to Carbon ERP to query production data and automate manufacturing workflows.
- "List all open work orders for the assembly line due this week."
- "Show me the bill of materials for product SKU-1042 including nested sub-assemblies."
- "What is the current inventory level for component C-2201 across all warehouses?"
- "Flag any quality non-conformances opened in the last 7 days and summarize root causes."
- "Create a new work order for 50 units of SKU-2099 scheduled for next Monday."Troubleshooting Carbon ERP
pnpm install fails with a corepack version mismatch error
Run `corepack enable` before installing, and ensure `nvm use` picks up the correct Node.js version specified in the repo's .nvmrc file. Corepack reads the packageManager field in package.json to determine the exact pnpm version.
setup.sh fails to connect to Supabase during migration
Verify your SUPABASE_URL and SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY in .env. The service role key (not the anon key) is required for migration scripts. For local development, make sure the local Supabase Docker stack is running with `crbn up`.
Background jobs (Inngest) are not processing work orders or webhooks
Carbon uses Inngest for background job processing. In local development, start the Inngest dev server alongside pnpm dev. Check that INNGEST_EVENT_KEY and INNGEST_SIGNING_KEY are set in your environment if using a hosted Inngest instance.
