Prerequisites
- Windows operating system (COM automation is Windows-only)
- AutoCAD 2000 or later installed with a valid license and COM automation enabled
- Python 3.8 or higher installed
- pywin32 library (installed automatically with the package)
- Claude Desktop or another MCP-compatible client
Clone the repository
Clone the autocad-mcp-server repository to your Windows machine.

Set up a Python virtual environment and install the package. This installs mcp>=1.0.0 and pywin32>=306 automatically.

Open the AutoCAD application. The server connects to a running AutoCAD instance via COM, so AutoCAD must be open before you use the MCP tools.
Configure Claude Desktop to use the server

COM error: 'AutoCAD.Application' not found or cannot connect
Make sure AutoCAD is already running before using the MCP tools. The server connects to an existing AutoCAD COM instance and cannot launch AutoCAD itself. If you have multiple AutoCAD versions, ensure the correct one is registered as the COM server.
pywin32 import error or win32com not found
Run `pip install pywin32` in your virtual environment, then run `python Scripts/pywin32_postinstall.py -install` from the venv Scripts directory to register COM components properly.
Server not available on macOS
This server uses Windows COM automation and is not compatible with macOS or Linux. AutoCAD for Mac uses a different API. The server only works on Windows with a COM-enabled AutoCAD installation.
