Prerequisites
- Node.js 18+ with npx available
- An Airtable account with a Personal Access Token (created at airtable.com/create/tokens)
- The token must have read/write scopes for the bases you intend to access
- An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code
Create an Airtable Personal Access Token
Go to airtable.com/create/tokens, click 'Create new token', name it, and grant it the scopes you need (data.records:read, data.records:write, schema.bases:read, etc.). Copy the token — it is only shown once.
Find your Base ID (optional)
If you want to lock the server to one default base, open the base in Airtable, look at the URL — the Base ID starts with 'app'. You can also leave AIRTABLE_BASE_ID unset and discover bases via the list_bases tool at runtime.
Add the server to your MCP client configuration
Open claude_desktop_config.json (or your client's equivalent) and add the airtable entry under mcpServers. Replace YOUR_AIRTABLE_TOKEN with your token and optionally set YOUR_BASE_ID.

Error: AIRTABLE_TOKEN is invalid or unauthorized
Verify the token at airtable.com/create/tokens. Ensure the token has the correct scopes (data.records:read at minimum) and that it has not expired. Personal Access Tokens do not expire by default but can be revoked.
Base not found or operations fail on a specific base
Double-check that AIRTABLE_BASE_ID starts with 'app' and matches the URL in Airtable. Run a 'list_bases' query first to confirm the exact ID. If the base is in a workspace your token cannot access, update the token's workspace scope.

Ensure you have Node.js 18+ and npm/npx installed. Run 'npx -y @rashidazarang/airtable-mcp --version' in a terminal to confirm the package installs correctly. Check network/proxy settings if npm registry is blocked.
