How to Set Up and Use Agentic Tools

Agentic Tools MCP Companion is a VS Code extension that provides a visual GUI interface for the agentic-tools-mcp server, enabling developers to manage tasks and memories directly inside VS Code with unlimited hierarchy depth (projects → tasks → subtasks → infinite nesting), priority and complexity scoring, time tracking, and tag management. The companion extension stores all data in a local .agentic-tools-mcp directory in your workspace, making it git-trackable and shareable. It pairs with the @pimzino/agentic-tools-mcp npm package, which is the actual MCP server that Claude and other AI assistants use to read and write the same task and memory data.

Prerequisites

  • VS Code 1.96.0 or higher
  • Node.js 18 or higher
  • An open workspace folder in VS Code
  • An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop for AI assistant integration
  • The @pimzino/agentic-tools-mcp npm package (for AI assistant tool access)
1

Install the VS Code extension

Open the VS Code Extensions view (Ctrl+Shift+X), search for 'Agentic Tools MCP Companion', and click Install. Alternatively install from Open VSX.

2

Open a workspace folder

The extension requires an open workspace. Open your project folder in VS Code. The 'Agentic Tools' icon will appear in the Activity Bar once a folder is open.

3

Install the MCP server package globally

Install the companion MCP server that Claude and other AI assistants will use to interact with your tasks and memories.

npm install -g @pimzino/agentic-tools-mcp
4

Configure Claude Desktop to use the MCP server

Add the agentic-tools server to your Claude Desktop configuration file so the AI assistant can read and modify your tasks.

5

Create your first project in VS Code

Click the '+' button in the Tasks view in the Agentic Tools sidebar to create a project, then add tasks and subtasks by right-clicking on items.

6

Verify data storage

All task and memory data is written to .agentic-tools-mcp/ in your workspace root. You can commit this directory to git to track changes alongside your code.

ls .agentic-tools-mcp/
# tasks/tasks.json
# memories/general/

Troubleshooting Agentic Tools

The Agentic Tools sidebar does not appear in VS Code

The extension requires an open workspace folder. Make sure you have opened a folder (File → Open Folder), not just a single file. Reload the VS Code window after opening a folder.

Claude cannot see tasks created in the VS Code extension

Both the VS Code extension and the MCP server read from .agentic-tools-mcp/ in the workspace root. Make sure Claude Desktop is configured to run @pimzino/agentic-tools-mcp and that the working directory matches your workspace. Restart Claude Desktop after updating the config.

npm install -g @pimzino/agentic-tools-mcp fails with permission errors

Use a Node.js version manager like nvm to avoid permission issues with global installs. Alternatively, use npx in the Claude Desktop config instead of a global install: npx -y @pimzino/agentic-tools-mcp.
