How to Set Up and Use Activepieces

Activepieces is an open-source AI workflow automation platform that exposes over 280 integrations — including Google Sheets, OpenAI, Discord, Slack, and more — as MCP-compatible tools that AI assistants can call directly. Rather than installing hundreds of individual MCP servers, you run a single self-hosted or cloud Activepieces instance and connect AI agents to it via one MCP endpoint. The server provides tools for discovering and managing flows, building automation steps, running tests, and performing full CRUD operations on tables and connections, all through natural language.

Prerequisites

  • A self-hosted Activepieces instance (Docker recommended) or an Activepieces Cloud account at activepieces.com
  • Node.js 18+ or Docker for self-hosting
  • An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf
  • An Activepieces API token (generated in Settings → API Keys)
  • Any third-party API credentials for integrations you want to automate (e.g. Google OAuth, Slack token)
1

Deploy or access an Activepieces instance

Start a local Activepieces instance with Docker, or sign up for Activepieces Cloud. The MCP server is built into the platform — no separate package installation is required.

docker run -d -p 8080:80 activepieces/activepieces:latest
2

Enable the MCP Server in Activepieces

Log in to the Activepieces UI, navigate to Settings → MCP Server, and enable the MCP endpoint. Note the MCP URL shown, which will be your-instance.com/mcp.

3

Create connections for your integrations

In Activepieces, add the connections your flows will use (e.g., authenticate Google Sheets, Slack, or other services). Credentials are stored server-side and never exposed through MCP tools.

4

Configure your MCP client

Point your MCP client at the Activepieces MCP URL. For Claude Desktop, add the server URL to your configuration file.

5

Build and publish automation flows

Use the AI assistant to create and publish Activepieces flows, or build them directly in the UI. Published flows become callable tools through the MCP interface.

6

Test the integration

Ask your AI assistant to list available flows or trigger a test execution to confirm the MCP connection is working end-to-end.

Activepieces Examples

Client configuration

Add this to your Claude Desktop or Cursor MCP configuration, replacing the URL with your actual Activepieces instance address.

    "activepieces": {
      "url": "https://your-instance.com/mcp"

Prompts to try

Use these prompts with Claude after connecting to your Activepieces MCP server.

- "List all my active automation flows in Activepieces"
- "Create a new flow that sends a Slack message when a Google Sheet row is added"
- "Run a test execution of my 'Daily Report' flow"
- "Show me all available integrations (pieces) I can use to build automations"
- "What connections do I have set up in Activepieces?"

Troubleshooting Activepieces

MCP client cannot connect to the Activepieces endpoint

Verify the AP_FRONTEND_URL environment variable is set to your public instance URL (e.g., https://your-instance.com/activepieces) for reverse-proxy deployments. Check that the MCP Server is enabled in Settings and that the URL in your client config matches exactly.

Flow execution fails with authentication errors

Re-authenticate the relevant connection in Activepieces Settings → Connections. OAuth tokens expire and must be refreshed. Credentials are stored server-side so no changes are needed to the MCP client config.

AI assistant does not see newly created flows as tools

After publishing a new flow in Activepieces, reconnect or restart your MCP client to refresh the tool list. The discovery tools in the MCP server reflect the current published state of your flows.
