How to Set Up and Use 5ire

5ire is a free, open-source, cross-platform desktop AI assistant that acts as a native MCP client, letting you connect any MCP server to power up conversations with file system access, database queries, web browsing, and more. It supports nine major AI providers — including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, DeepSeek, Grok, and local Ollama models — alongside a built-in local knowledge base with multilingual RAG using the bge-m3 embedding model. Developers and power users choose 5ire when they want a single, portable AI desktop app that can integrate diverse AI backends and external tools without subscription lock-in.

Prerequisites

  • A 64-bit operating system: macOS 12+, Windows 10+, or a modern Linux distribution
  • Node.js 18+ installed (required for MCP server runtime)
  • Python 3.9+ installed (required for Python-based MCP servers)
  • uv Python package manager installed (recommended for MCP server management)
  • An API key for at least one supported provider: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, DeepSeek, Grok, or Doubao — or a local Ollama installation
1

Download and install 5ire

Visit the 5ire GitHub releases page at https://github.com/nanbingxyz/5ire/releases and download the installer for your platform (.dmg for macOS, .exe installer or NSIS for Windows, .AppImage or .deb for Linux). Run the installer.

2

Launch 5ire and configure an AI provider

On first launch, open Settings and add your provider credentials. For Anthropic/Claude, enter your Anthropic API key. For OpenAI, enter your OpenAI API key. You can configure multiple providers simultaneously.

3

Add an MCP server

In 5ire, navigate to Settings > MCP Servers and click 'Add Server'. Enter the server name, command, and arguments. For example, to add the filesystem MCP server:

{
  "name": "filesystem",
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/Users/yourname/Documents"]
}
4

Enable the MCP server in a conversation

In the chat interface, click the tools/plugins icon at the bottom of the message input area and toggle on the MCP servers you want active for the current conversation.

5

Set up the local knowledge base (optional)

To use local RAG, navigate to Knowledge Base in the sidebar, click 'Import', and upload your documents (docx, xlsx, pptx, pdf, txt, or csv). 5ire will embed them using bge-m3 locally on your machine.

5ire Examples

Client configuration

5ire is itself the MCP client — no separate JSON config is needed. MCP servers are configured through the 5ire Settings UI. This is the equivalent JSON structure 5ire uses internally.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "filesystem": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/Users/yourname/Documents"]
    }
  }
}

Prompts to try

Once you have an MCP server connected, try these prompts in the 5ire chat interface.

- "List all PDF files in my Documents folder."
- "Read the contents of my project notes and summarize the key action items."
- "Search my knowledge base for anything related to quarterly planning."
- "Using the filesystem server, create a new file called ideas.md with these three ideas: ..."

Troubleshooting 5ire

MCP server fails to start with 'command not found' error

5ire requires Node.js and Python to be installed and on the system PATH. Open a terminal and run node --version and python --version to verify. If missing, install them and restart 5ire.

AI responses are slow or the model cannot be reached

Check that your API key is valid and that you have sufficient quota. For Ollama, ensure the Ollama daemon is running locally (ollama serve) and that the model you selected has been pulled (ollama pull <model-name>).

Knowledge base files are not returning relevant results

Large files may take a few minutes to embed on first import. Wait for the indexing spinner to complete. If results are still poor, try splitting very large documents into smaller chunks before importing.
