How to Set Up and Use Active Directory
Koppla is a Python MCP server that bridges AI assistants with Microsoft Active Directory via LDAP, enabling natural language queries and management of users, groups, and organizational units. It supports read operations like finding inactive users, listing group memberships, and locating locked accounts, as well as optional write operations such as modifying user attributes and managing group membership. IT administrators and sysadmins use it to query and manage their AD environment conversationally without writing LDAP queries by hand.
Prerequisites
- Python 3.8+ and pip installed on the machine running the server
- Network access to an Active Directory / LDAP server
- AD credentials with appropriate read (and optionally write) permissions
- An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop
Install Koppla
Install the koppla package from PyPI using pip.
pip install kopplaGather your Active Directory connection details
You will need the AD server address, a bind username and password, and the base DN (distinguished name) for your directory. For example: AD_SERVER=ldap://dc01.corp.local, BASE_DN=DC=corp,DC=local.
Configure the MCP server with AD credentials
Add Koppla to your MCP client config, passing the AD connection details as environment variables. Write operations are disabled by default and must be explicitly enabled.
Restart Claude Desktop
Restart the client to load the Koppla server. Confirm the connection by asking Claude to list users or groups.
Test a read query
Run a safe read-only query to verify connectivity and permissions before attempting any write operations.

Connection refused or timeout when connecting to AD
Verify that AD_SERVER uses the correct protocol prefix (ldap:// or ldaps://) and that the server address is reachable from the machine running Koppla. Check firewall rules for port 389 (LDAP) or 636 (LDAPS).
Authentication failure with valid credentials
Ensure AD_USER is the full distinguished name (e.g. CN=serviceaccount,OU=ServiceAccounts,DC=corp,DC=local) or the UPN format ([email protected]). Some AD configurations require one format over the other.
Write operations fail even with AD_WRITE_ENABLED=true
The service account must have write permissions on the specific OU or object in Active Directory. Use the AD delegation wizard in ADUC to grant the minimum required permissions to the bind account.
